Winter Olympics Churning Out More Drama Than a Spanish Soap Opera

Things are getting pretty exciting as the Olympics continue to roll on.  Being Canadian, it is no surprise that hockey is at the forefront of much of the media attention.

The Canadian team lost to the US in the opening round and I think that I speak for everyone when I say that it was disappointing.  The US has a great team and they played well but the difference was Ryan Miller in the US goal.  He stood on his head for the win.

As a result of that loss, Team Canada had to play a qualifying game against Germany yesterday (which they won) and will meet Russia today.  That is the game that everyone has been looking forward to.  Sid the Kid vs. Alex the Great.  It should be a great game.

Disappointing display from an American skiier on the podium yesterday.  She was being presented with a bronze medal and for some inexplicable reason, also pulled out the gold medal she had won in an earlier event for photo opps.  As one Canadian announcer said, “That is like getting married one week and wearing your wedding dress to your friend’s wedding the following week.”

Probably the most sad/inspiring story from a Canadian perspective is the figure skater whose mom passed away two days before her event began.  Incredibly Joannie decided to remain in the Olympics and posted an outstanding performance in her short skate placing her in third position.  Amazing.

How cool have these Olympic games been?  Yesterday I went out and bought a bright red Team Canada hat.
