Vancouver Winter Olympics Making Canada Proud
Vancouver is hosting the winter Olympics at the moment and while there have been a few glitches, I’ve been impressed with everthing so far.
Nobody could have written a better script for the first few days of competition. Let me set the stage for you. No Canadian has ever won a gold medal on Canadian soil. That includes both Winter and Summer Games and the media was building this up to the hilt. It was actually quite annoying.
After two days of competition we still hadn’t won gold and there was a lot of tension in the air. The growing concern was being compounded because there is a world champion skier that was born and raised in Canada but moved to Australia to compete as an Aussie.
This dude runs a multi-million dollar Internet business that (allegedly) distributes spyware. The whole thing seemed pretty dodgy and to make things more interesting the guy doesn’t exactly come across as a nice guy. Nothing could be a bigger slap in the face than to have this guy win gold on Canadian soil.
On the other side, we had Alex Bilodeau who by all accounts should be in the same category as Mother Teresa. Of course, the media played this role up as well but Alex is the complete opposite to the Aussie/Canadian. Alex’s older brother is his biggest supporter and is also inflicted with cerebral palsy. The two are inseperable.
Can you imagine the scene when Alex nails his run and beats out the Aussie for the first Canadian gold medal on Canadian soil? It was pandemonium and I suspect that anyone that didn’t feel overwhelmed by the whole situation doesn’t actually have a soul.
Very cool. I know they’ll end up making movie about this situation. Truth is stranger than fiction and sometimes, sweeter.
