Updating Your Site on a Regular Basis Even if You Hate Writing

If you’re depending on seo to drive traffic to your site or blog there are two key ingredients to you success. Content and backlinks. I talked about back-links in an earlier post and today I’d like to cover the topic of content.

I love writing so adding content is easy for me. However, I know that this is not the norm so here are a few ideas to allow you to keep you site fresh and interesting even if the thought of writing makes your skin crawl.

If you’re a business owner find someone within your company who loves to write and either pay them or otherwise “incentivize” them to write for you. These people are easy to find because they’re the ones sending you those long, detailed emails that you either appreciate or have grown to loath.

If you’re not a business owner consider outsourcing your content creation. You can find decent writers to create unique content for you very cheaply. I’d recommend guru.com over elance.com simply because you’ll find a higher quality of provider at the former. Having said that, I’ve had success with both sites. A quick side note – prepare to spend a bit of time finding the right person or people using these types of services. It isn’t easy to find someone with the skillset and the work habits that you require.

If you love talking about what you do but you dislike writing, you can simply record your content and send it off to be transcribed. This ends up being a little more expensive than having articles “ghost written” but the articles will be your ideas and in your voice so the quality will definitely be higher. It is also very helpful to carry a voice recorder along with you so when you get stuck in traffic or at the airport, you can record content as you see fit. Finally, with regards to speaking your content, why not include the original files on your site as a streaming audio or podcast? Different people prefer to absorb information in different formats so this could only help.

Last idea. If you’re really lazy (and I don’t mean that in a bad way), if you have a WordPress blog take a look at the WP-Omatic plugin. It is very cool. I have a number of blogs that create themselves and are getting very nice traffic just using this tool. Two keys to using WP Omatic though: First, always give credit and a link to the orginal author of the material your harvesting. Second, take advantage of their auto-linking option. This allows you to turn any instance of a word into a link. For example, if you’re generating leads for “mortgage loans” you can tell the tool to create link to your lead capture page everytime it finds that term. It is very useful.

There are many other ways to create great content but they’ll have to wait for another day. The point is that you don’t have to let your dislike for writing hold your business back. Get out there and get creating!
