The Real Secret to Success in Marketing
You ready? This took me a while to figure out but it is so simple it is ridiculous.
ACTION
That’s it. Nothing more and nothing less. How many of us get innundated with all the latest marketing ideas and techniques and gather all of this knowledge but never get around to taking action?
The truth is that all of the knowledge in the world doesn’t amount to anything unless you apply it. I know that I’ve been guilty of this in the past. Even now, I still get side-tracked by emails or cool, new ideas rather than applying what I know and seeing what happens.
Here is the thing. It is safer to learn something new than it is to risk doing something that will produce results. In marketing everything is a result. Yeah, you may argue that results may be classified as good or bad but who cares?
It is all irrelevant until you do something.
Everything is theory until you try it yourself. You’ll never even produce a result (good or bad) unless you take the risk and take some kind of action.
Years ago I had a boss who was probably one of the most fearless guys I’d ever met. His favorite saying was, “What is the worst thing that can possibly happen?” Great advice except when you’re like most of us and your mind really does conjure up the worst thing that can happen and you get stopped in your tracks.
The solution? Treat everything in marketing (and in life) as an experiment. Step back and say, “I’m going to try this and see what happens. Whatever the result, I’m going to learn something.”
Then just hunker down and get ‘er done.
