If you spend even a little bit of time around Internet marketing or Internet marketers (run away!) you’re going to find yourself asking, “What does SEM stand for?”
What SEM stands for is Search Engine Marketing. It is an all-encompassing term that covers every conceivable way of getting traffic or visitors from search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN (or Live Search) and hundreds of other barely significant search engines scattered around the Internet.
Like any niche industry, online marketing has its own language and SEM is yet another one of the many acronyms that we use on a daily basis. To make things more complicated SEM includes sub-disciplines such as Search Engine Optimization (SEO), link-builing and pay per click (PPC) marketing.
There you go. Now you know what SEM stands for.

Traditionally, I’ve been against pay per click (PPC) marketing as a means of traffic generation simply because it is a nuisance to set up and as soon as you stop paying the traffic stops. In other words it must be maintained and it isn’t as “leverageable” as other forms of marketing… if leverageable is a word, that is.

In 2002 I had been in Sao Paulo, Brazil for about six months when it became quite clear that there was a huge opportunity in the language business. It was estimated that nearly 4 million people actually studied English in Sao Paulo alone. There were also over 1,000 English schools competing for these students so it wouldn’t be quite as easy as one would hope.

Ok, if you’ve been following this blog or any of my materials or any length of time you know how I like to generate sales leads. In a nutshell, I like to offer something of value for free in exchange for the prospect’s contact information and permission to keep in touch. Often this is an info product or email course related to the product being promoted.

The fastest way to get visitors to your website is by buying ads on a search engine but you don’t have to hire a Pay Per Click company to do so. Pay per click (PPC) is an online advertising solution in which you buy the space but you only pay when someone clicks on your ad and visits your site.
