It Ain’t All Glory

I have to credit Boomer (aka Popeye) with the phrase “It ain’t all glory”. He has a knack of coming out with the one liners that are perfect for the situation. I don’t actually recall the context in which I heard him use this phrase the first time but it is sticking in my mind today for another reason.

BeaverTalk.com GalsI just saw my buddy Susan McCord at the gym. She and Sandra have a very cool project going. It started as a Internet radio talk show called Leave it Two Beavers and it has now blossomed into video and a new site called Beaver Talk.

It is always nice to talk to Susan because she is always so up-beat and optimistic… as all successful people must be. I found out today that she has been working on her show for four years already. If you knew Susan and Sandra or if you tuned into one of their shows on their site or on YouTube you would know that they are going to be successful.

Of course, the question is when? How long does one stick with something before pulling the pin? The short answer is “as long as it takes”.

I recently wrote a post about the power of focus. They have this ability. Both Susan and Sandra work full-time and produce Beaver Talk in their spare time. If you’ve ever had the “pleasure” of producing a video or trying to maintaining a site like Beaver Talk you’ll know that it takes a lot more than just a little spare time. Yet I’ve never heard Susan complain and I can tell that she will continue until she succeeds.

She reminds me a lot of my buddy Dave. Dave is a very successful stunt guy and everyone always tells Dave what a lucky guy he is to be able to do what he loves to do and get paid so well for it. However, I’ve known Dave long enough to know that he isn’t lucky.

When I met Dave he was working as a bike courier, bartender, or any other job that would pay the bills yet still allow him to leave if his beeper should go off and he had the chance to work on the set. For SEVEN years Dave did this before he could finally quit all other jobs.

It ain’t all glory… and luck has very little to do with it.
