I have to credit Boomer (aka Popeye) with the phrase “It ain’t all glory”. He has a knack of coming out with the one liners that are perfect for the situation. I don’t actually recall the context in which I heard him use this phrase the first time but it is sticking in my mind today for another reason.
I just saw my buddy Susan McCord at the gym. She and Sandra have a very cool project going. It started as a Internet radio talk show called Leave it Two Beavers and it has now blossomed into video and a new site called Beaver Talk.

It is no secret that we’re living in the information age and we’re bombarded with data everywhere we turn. Good news-bad news, funny and sad stuff, TV, radio, videos, audios, blog posts, press releases – the list goes on and on.
Some people may think that all of this is good but the fact is that it is a distraction. I am an information junkie. I admit it. More specifically, I’m a marketing information junkie. I subscribe to newsletter lists, blog feeds, even offline mailing lists just to see what everyone is doing.
Recently, I did a little experiment based on a great video I found within this site. You have to join the mailing list to get it (it isn’t on YouTube) but it is well worth it. (more…)

Even I have to laugh at this one. On Sunday I made the trek out to Home Depot not because I needed anything for my home but because there is a little Harvey’s kiosk inside the superstore. For those of you non-Canadians that may not be familiar with Harvey’s, they have the best burgers in the country.
The problem is that this fast food chain is an east coast thing and the only place you can find a Harvey’s out here is the airport (@ $5 per minute parking) or the Home Depot which is a good 15 minute drive from my place.
So I make the trek out there because Sunday was my ‘free day’ and I could eat whatever I wanted. I ordered a double cheeseburger, salad and diet coke and have a seat. Well, no sooner than I sit down does this guy get left by his owners while they order some grub. This is exactly how he stared at me the whole time I tried to enjoy my meal.
Now, I am not a mushy guy and I’ve always said that I refuse to be guilted into anything but this was too much. I knew that I shouldn’t be pigging out on a burger and this dude was looking at me as if to say, “You know, I’m dying of starvation here. If you were to give me that burger, you wouldn’t be such a fat-ass and I won’t die within the next 2 minutes.”
The thing was that he didn’t waiver. People were walking by and just laughing at how much of an effort he was putting into looking sad and how uncomfortable I was, even while pretending that it didn’t bother me.
Needless to say, he got half my burger – with his owner’s permission of course. As a side note, his owner did say that this guy always did this to strangers and his batting average was darned near perfect.
The owner sent me this picture today to remind me of the experience.

I was in the grocery store waiting in line to pay for my “post-workout, destroy all the gains I’ve made at the gym” chocolate cookie. It seems that everyone that works at this place is pretty bitchy, especially the cashiers. Hence, my loyalty.

What small business owner isn’t looking to find new customers? Sales and Marketing are the bane of existence for owners that love what they do but find that they don’t have a constant stream of new customers offering to give them money.
